Lavender in Drome Provencale, France

There are around thirty different species of « Lavandula ». Amongst them, three grow wild in France: spike lavender (wild one that grows in scrublands, contains a lot of camphor), fine lavender (the real one, natural and wild with medicinal purposes) and lavendine (the cross between the two wild ones: a hybrid).
In spring, a tiny spike grows on each lavender stem. As the months go by, it gets bigger and contains more and more flowers. It’s only between mid June and mid August that fields turn purple. You will then discover wonderful shades of colors…pink, purple, blue…

The AOC label « huile essentielle de lavande de Haute Provence » (fine lavender essential oil of Haute Provence) was created in 1981.This AOC is only for 100% pure fine lavender oil, obtained after distillation of the flowers, thanks to the steam process. Usually, blossoming starts in June and ends in August, but it really depends on the height and on the weather. For example, fine lavender needs arid soils, a little water and a lot of sun!
